The manual winding tourbillon is constructed with a baseplate of black onyx – a type of cryptocrystalline quartz chalcedony composed of silicon dioxide (SiO2). Varieties of onyx which feature rectilinear black and white stripes are part of the agate family, whereas true Black Onyx is entirely solid in color.

The Richard Mille RM 51-02 is a technical marvel, with a free sprung balance and skeletonised bridges crafted from PVD-treated grade 5 titanium and hand-finished with anglage and black polish on the movement. To protect against accidental overwinding and potential damage to the winding stem or mainspring barrel, a torque-limiting crown has been added for extra security.
